Ducted reverse cycle air conditioning in Shepparton
Ducted reverse cycle heating and cooling for Shepparton homes: sizing, zoning, replacing gas ducted heating, licences and published installed price ranges.
Ducted reverse cycle air conditioning heats and cools the whole house from one outdoor unit, a fan coil in the roof space and insulated ducts to ceiling outlets. In Shepparton it is most often installed to replace an ageing gas ducted heater and an evaporative cooler with a single electric system. Published installed ranges run from $8,400 to $14,700 for a standard system to $12,600 to $23,100 for a larger or zoned home.

Why are Shepparton households switching to ducted reverse cycle?
Plenty of Shepparton houses run gas ducted heating in winter and a roof-mounted evaporative cooler in summer. The federal energy.gov.au heating and cooling guide describes that pairing, then says a reverse cycle system may be more practical. Keeping both means servicing two appliances and paying a gas bill as well as a power bill, while a ducted reverse cycle system does both jobs.
Other reasons owners give:
- The gas ducted heater is old, has failed a service, or the household wants to drop the gas connection.
- The evaporative cooler copes with dry heat but not humid January nights.
- A rental property must have efficient fixed cooling in the main living area at the start of a new lease from 1 March 2027, and a failed heater that cannot be repaired must be replaced with efficient electric heating from the same date (Consumer Affairs Victoria).
- A Victorian Energy Upgrades discount is available when an efficient ducted reverse cycle system replaces a ducted gas heater, and the discount is larger for bigger systems (heating and cooling discounts).
There is no rule forcing an owner-occupier to give up a working gas heater. Victoria’s electrification page says existing gas space heating does not have to be replaced, and existing gas appliances can still be used, maintained and repaired (existing residential buildings).
How is a ducted system sized?
The Victorian Energy Upgrades buyer’s guide recommends 1.1 to 1.4 kW of heating output for every 10 m² of floor area the system covers, adjusted for the house itself, and an onsite load assessment by the installer as the best way to size it. On that rule, a 160 m² single-storey home lands between about 17.6 and 22.4 kW of heating before the installer allows for insulation, glazing and orientation.
| Choice | What it means | Published installed range |
|---|---|---|
| Standard ducted | One or two zones, a 3-bedroom home or single-storey 4-bedroom with good roof access | $8,400 to $14,700 |
| Premium or zoned ducted | Larger homes, two storeys, or room-by-room zoning | $12,600 to $23,100 |
| New ductwork only | Replacing the whole duct run when the old one is undersized or perished | $2,000 to $6,300 |
These are published Melbourne metro figures. No equivalent regional Victorian table turned up, so treat them as a guide and compare written quotes.
Can the existing gas ducts be reused?
Sometimes, but plan on replacing them. The buyer’s guide warns that older ducting may not be efficient or in good condition, and gives the general rule of thumb as replacing the ducting when moving from gas to reverse cycle. The federal YourHome guide adds that ducts for a ducted air conditioner should be insulated to at least R1.5 with sealed joints (YourHome heating and cooling).
What does a provider check before quoting?
- Roof space height, access and the condition of any existing ducts.
- Floor plan, room sizes, ceiling heights and which rooms are used when.
- How many zones make sense. Zoning living areas separately from bedrooms means the system is not heating empty rooms.
- Outdoor unit position: it needs clear airflow, and EPA Victoria lists a heat pump running for heating as residential noise with quiet hours from 10 pm until 7 am on weeknights, later on weekend mornings (EPA residential noise).
- Switchboard and supply capacity for a large compressor.
- Whether the old gas heater is being removed and capped, which is gasfitting work.
What does the work involve, step by step?
- Load calculation and zone design.
- Decommissioning the old gas heater by a gasfitter, if one is being replaced.
- Removing old ducts and cutting in new ceiling outlets and a return air grille.
- Installing the fan coil in the roof space on a platform with a condensate tray and drain.
- Running insulated flexible duct to each outlet and sealing every joint.
- Setting the outdoor unit and running refrigerant pipe and power.
- Pressure testing, evacuating, charging and commissioning, then setting up the zone controller.
- Handover with the compliance paperwork and warranty.
Licences and paperwork in Victoria
- Refrigerated air-conditioning work, including ducted systems and their ductwork, is a registered class under Part 4 of the Plumbing Regulations 2018, regulated by the Building and Plumbing Commission (refrigerated air-conditioning work).
- A restricted split licence from the Australian Refrigeration Council covers only single-head systems under 18 kW cooling capacity, so a larger ducted system needs a technician with the full licence.
- Electrical connection is done by a licensed electrician under Energy Safe Victoria rules.
- Capping or removing the old gas heater is gasfitting work for a registered or licensed gasfitter, and a licensed plumber issues a compliance certificate wherever the BPC rules require one.
What will a careful installer refuse to do?
They will not size the system from the old gas heater’s rating, reuse perished or uninsulated ducts to save a day, or leave the fan coil without a safe tray and drain over a plaster ceiling. They will not promise a discount before the accredited provider has confirmed the product and paperwork, since retrospective discounts are typically not possible.
Local angle
House size changes the answer across the district. In the 2021 Census, 58.5 per cent of occupied homes in Kialla had four or more bedrooms, against 23.5 per cent in Shepparton itself, so zoned ducted systems come up more often in Kialla while single-zone systems or splits suit many smaller Shepparton houses. The Kialla area page and the Shepparton area page cover the housing in more detail.
What to do next
Gather a rough floor plan, a photo of the existing heater’s data plate and a note of the rooms you want covered. Then request quotes for a ducted reverse cycle system. This website is a referral service: independent local providers inspect the house, quote it and carry out the installation. If you only need one or two rooms done, compare with split system air conditioning, and if the gas heater still works, read the gas ducted heating service guide first.
Frequently asked questions
- Can ducted reverse cycle replace both my gas heater and evaporative cooler?
Yes. One ducted reverse cycle system provides both heating and cooling through ceiling outlets, so the gas heater and the roof-mounted evaporative unit can both be removed. Plan for new ductwork, as the old ducts are often unsuitable.
- How many zones should a ducted system have?
That depends on the floor plan and how the house is used. A common layout puts living areas in one zone and bedrooms in another, and larger homes may add more. State guidance recommends zoning because it lets you heat or cool only the rooms in use.
- Is a ducted system more expensive to run than split systems?
It can be, because it conditions a larger area and loses some energy through the ducts. Good zoning, well insulated ducts and sensible thermostat settings narrow the gap. Splits are usually cheaper to run if only one or two rooms are used most of the time.
- Will a ducted reverse cycle system meet the 2027 rental standards?
An efficient fixed reverse cycle system with an outlet in the main living area can meet both the heating and cooling requirements of the new Victorian rental standards. Check the product's ratings against the Consumer Affairs Victoria requirements before buying.
- What happens to the old gas ducted heater?
A gasfitter disconnects and caps the gas supply, and the old unit and ducts are removed and disposed of. Make sure that work and its paperwork are listed on the quote.
