Gas ducted heating service and replacement in Shepparton

When a Shepparton gas ducted heater needs a service, a repair or replacing, who is allowed to work on it in Victoria, and how gas compares with going electric.

A gas ducted heater should be serviced at least once every two years by a gasfitter qualified for Type A appliance servicing, and sooner if it starts behaving differently. The gasfitter inspects the heater and its installation, cleans and adjusts it, and runs a spillage test for carbon monoxide before it goes back into use. When a unit is worn out, the choice is a new gas heater or a move to ducted reverse cycle, and from 1 March 2027 that choice is narrower for rental properties.

Signs the heater needs attention

  • The flame colour or the sound of the burner has changed.
  • The heater cycles on and off, or cuts out before the house warms up.
  • Some outlets blow cold or weak air, which can point to a split or crushed duct in the roof.
  • Soot marks around the heater cabinet, the flue or the outlets.
  • Headaches, nausea or tiredness in the house while the heater runs. Carbon monoxide has no colour or smell, so turn the heater off, ventilate and get it checked.
  • No service record for the last two years.

Energy Safe Victoria lists the conditions that drive carbon monoxide up: a faulty or poorly maintained appliance, a partly or fully blocked flue, and poor ventilation. It also warns that any gas heater can spill carbon monoxide, central heating units included, and that kitchen rangehoods and bathroom exhaust fans should not run at the same time as a heater because they can create negative pressure (ESV, heating your home with gas). ESV recommends a carbon monoxide alarm as a back-up measure, and it should never stand in for regular servicing.

Why does servicing matter so much in Shepparton?

Winter nights are cold enough that the heater runs for long stretches. BOM records for Shepparton Airport show July has a mean minimum of 3.4 degrees, and the station averages 44.2 days a year at or below 2 degrees (BOM climate statistics). A heater that works that hard through June, July and August is worth having checked in March or April, before the frosts start and before a fault leaves the house cold.

What a gas heater service covers

A service is done to AS 4575 by a gasfitter whose registration or licence includes Type A appliance servicing (BPC class description). Expect:

  1. An inspection of the heater, its flue and the installation around it.
  2. Internal cleaning, maintenance and adjustment of the appliance.
  3. Repair or replacement of any faulty component.
  4. A check that ventilation for the appliance is adequate.
  5. A combustion spillage test before the appliance goes back into service.
  6. A written record of what was found and fixed (for a rental, the record of gas servicing work lodged with the BPC).

No published price for a gas heater service on its own turned up. The nearest figures in the Melbourne guide used on this site are $210 to $580 per system for a ducted system service and $160 to $525 for a minor repair, so ask the gasfitter for a set service fee and a separate price for parts such as an igniter, flame sensor or fan motor.

Repair, replace with gas, or go electric?

Option When it makes sense What to weigh up
Repair One failed part on a heater that otherwise passes its service Ask what else the service found before paying for parts
New gas ducted heater House stays on gas and the ducts are sound, from $4,000 to $11,550 installed No cooling, and gas supply and running costs stay
Ducted reverse cycle Owner wants heating and cooling from one electric system Higher upfront cost, usually new ducts; see ducted reverse cycle
Splits in key rooms Small house or a tight budget Bedrooms may go unheated unless more heads are added; see split systems

An honest provider will say so when the repair bill is heading towards the cost of a new system.

Rules that apply in Victoria

  • Owner-occupiers: there is no requirement to replace existing gas space heating. Gas hot water systems cannot be installed from 1 March 2027, and from 1 January 2027 new homes, including knock-down rebuilds, cannot be connected to gas except in specific circumstances (existing residential buildings).
  • Rental providers: a gas safety check is required every two years by a gasfitter endorsed in Type A appliance servicing, under the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 and the Residential Tenancies Regulations 2021. (Consumer Affairs Victoria gas and electrical safety). From 1 March 2027, a fixed heating system that fails and cannot be repaired must be replaced with an energy-efficient fixed electric system with an outlet in the main living area (new minimum standards).
  • Compliance certificate: installing or replacing any Type A gas appliance needs a compliance certificate from a licensed plumber, whatever the job costs, under Part 12A of the Building Act 1993 (BPC compliance certificates). Installations are done to AS/NZS 5601.1.

What a careful gasfitter will never do

They will not return a heater to service after a failed spillage test, leave a blocked flue in place, skip the compliance certificate on a replacement, or service a heater without showing a card that lists the Type A servicing class. Check the card, or look the practitioner up on the BPC register.

What to do next

Find the heater’s brand, model and the date of the last service sticker, then book a gas heating service or replacement quote. Your request goes to an independent gasfitter in the district, who quotes and does the work under their own registration. The cost guide has the replacement ranges side by side, and the Tatura page covers heating on the colder western side of the district.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to replace my gas ducted heater with an electric system?

Not if you own and live in the home. Victoria does not require owner-occupiers to replace existing gas space heating, and existing heaters can be repaired and maintained. Rental properties are different from 1 March 2027 if the heater fails and cannot be repaired.

What is a carbon monoxide spillage test?

It is a test the gasfitter runs at the end of a service to confirm that combustion gases are going out through the flue and not into the house. A heater that fails it should not be returned to use until the cause is fixed.

Should I have a carbon monoxide alarm?

An alarm is a useful back-up, and Energy Safe Victoria suggests one, but it does not replace a regular service. Choose an alarm that meets a recognised standard and install it as the manufacturer describes.

Can any plumber service my gas heater?

No. The gasfitter must hold registration or a licence that includes Type A appliance servicing, which sits on top of the general gasfitting class. Ask to see the plumber's card, or check the Building and Plumbing Commission register.

My heater works but is very old. Should I replace it?

If it passes its service, there is no legal need to replace it. Many owners plan a replacement once repair bills start climbing, or when they want cooling as well and a reverse cycle system becomes the better buy.
